Is Ghee Measured in Litres or Kg? 1 kg vs 1 Litre Ghee Explained

Ghee is sold both ways in India: by volume (ml or litres) and by weight (grams or kg). The two are not the same amount. Ghee weighs about 0.91 g per ml, so a 1 litre jar holds about 910 g of ghee and a 1 kg pack holds about 1.1 litres. That makes 1 kg roughly 10% more ghee than 1 litre, which matters when you compare prices.

Quick take

  • Both units are legal — ml/litre and g/kg.
  • 1 litre ≈ 910 g; 1 kg ≈ 1.1 litres (1,099 ml).
  • 1 kg is about 10% more ghee than 1 litre.
  • Compare per kilo: price per litre ÷ 0.91.

“Is ghee sold in litres or kilos?” comes up every time someone compares two jars side by side. Both units are in use, and the gap between them is large enough to change which jar is actually cheaper.

Our A2 buffalo bilona ghee comes in 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre and 2 litre glass jars. The weight of each is in the chart below.

Why ghee is sold in both units

Ghee sits between a fat and an oil. Warm, it is a clear golden liquid that pours like oil, so many brands fill and sell it by volume, the way cooking oil is sold. Cool, it is a solid dairy fat, like butter, which is sold by weight. Neither is wrong. What matters is that you know which one you are paying for.

1 kg ghee vs 1 litre ghee

Ghee is almost pure milk fat, and fat is lighter than water. Its density is about 0.91 g/ml (ghee density explained), so:

PackVolumeWeight
1 litre1,000 ml~910 g
1 kg~1,099 ml1,000 g
Difference~99 ml~90 g

A 1 kg pack therefore gives you about 90 g more ghee than a 1 litre jar — roughly 18 extra teaspoons.

Which unit is more accurate?

Weight. The mass of ghee does not change with temperature, but its volume does, very slightly: it expands as it melts and contracts as it sets. A litre of warm, liquid ghee and a litre of cold, solid ghee are not exactly the same amount. For buying and for recipes that need precision, weigh it. For everyday cooking, spoons are fine (1 teaspoon ≈ 4.5–5 g, 1 tablespoon ≈ 13–14 g).

What the label has to say

Every pre-packed food in India must state its net quantity. Under a 2023 amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, if edible oil, vanaspati, ghee or butter oil is declared by volume, its net weight must be declared as well. So a jar marked “1 L” should also tell you how many grams are inside. Look for the “Net Qty” line, not the big number on the front.

How to compare prices fairly

Convert everything to price per kilo:

  • Sold per litre? Price per kg ≈ price per litre ÷ 0.91.
  • Sold per kg? Already comparable.

Example: our 1 litre jar is ₹2,799, which works out to about ₹3,076 per kg. A different brand at ₹2,900 per kg is therefore slightly cheaper per gram of ghee, even though ₹2,900 looks like the bigger number. Price is only half the comparison, of course — check what you are getting for it with a lab report and these 10 questions. More on fair prices: A2 ghee price.

Frequently asked questions

Is ghee measured in litres or kg?

Both. Ghee is sold by volume (ml or litres) and by weight (grams or kg). Since ghee weighs about 0.91 g per ml, 1 litre is about 910 g and 1 kg is about 1.1 litres.

Is 1 kg ghee the same as 1 litre ghee?

No. 1 kg of ghee is about 1,099 ml, so it holds about 90 g more ghee than a 1 litre jar, roughly 10% more.

Which is better to buy, 1 kg or 1 litre ghee?

Neither is better in itself. Convert both to price per kilo (price per litre divided by 0.91) and buy whichever is cheaper per kilo for the same quality.

Why is ghee sold by volume?

Warm ghee is liquid and pours like oil, so many brands fill and sell it by volume. Indian rules require the weight to be declared too when ghee is sold by volume.

How many grams is 1 litre of ghee?

About 910 grams, using a density of 0.91 g per ml for melted ghee.
