Quick take

  • 500 ml ≈ 455 g · 900 ml ≈ 819 g · 1 L ≈ 910 g.
  • 5 L ≈ 4.55 kg · 15 L tin ≈ 13.65 kg.
  • A 15 kg tin holds ~1.35 kg more ghee than a 15 litre tin.
  • A 900 ml pack is 10% less than a 1 litre jar — check the price per kg.

Ghee is packed in everything from 100 ml sample jars to 15 litre tins for sweet shops and caterers. Because ghee is lighter than water, the number on the pack and its weight never match. These charts use 0.91 g/ml, the density of melted ghee (ghee density).

Solid, grainy ghee packs a little differently from melted ghee, so treat these as close estimates. For an exact figure, weigh it.

900 ml vs 1 litre packs

Some ghee is sold in 900 ml packs that sit on the shelf next to 1 litre jars. At about 819 g, a 900 ml pack holds about 91 g less ghee than a 1 litre jar. That is fine if the price reflects it — just compare price per kilo, not price per pack (1 kg vs 1 litre ghee).

Tins: 5 litre, 15 litre and 15 kg

Bulk ghee for weddings, sweet shops, temples and caterers usually comes in tins. Two tins that both say “15” can differ by more than a kilo: a 15 kg tin holds about 1.35 kg more ghee than a 15 litre tin (about 13.65 kg). The label should show the net weight even when the tin is sold by volume — Indian packaging rules require it for ghee.
