Grass-Fed Ghee: What It Is and Why It Matters
Grass-fed ghee is made from the milk of animals raised largely on grass and natural forage rather than grain-heavy feed. Grass-fed milk tends to be richer, and its ghee can be higher in fat-soluble vitamins and CLA. It is about the animal's diet, separate from A2 and the bilona method.

Quick take
- Grass-fed = milk from animals raised mainly on grass and forage, not grain-heavy feed.
- Grass-fed milk tends to be richer, so its ghee can be higher in vitamins and CLA.
- It's about diet — separate from A2 and bilona, but best when combined with them.
“Grass-fed” is one of the most meaningful words on a ghee label — and one of the most misused. Here's what it actually means.
What grass-fed means
Grass-fed ghee comes from animals (cows or buffaloes) raised largely on grass and natural forage rather than grain-heavy or industrial feed. It describes the animal's diet, which shapes the quality of the milk — and therefore the ghee.
Why it can mean better ghee
Milk from grass-fed animals tends to be richer in fat and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K), and often higher in CLA and beneficial fatty acids. That's why grass-fed ghee is prized — you can taste the richness, and it carries more of the nutrition people want from ghee. Our own buffalo ghee is made from grass-fed Murrah buffalo milk.
Grass-fed vs A2 vs bilona
These are different things — and the best ghee combines them:
- Grass-fed = the animal's diet.
- A2 = the milk's protein type (buffalo milk is naturally A2).
- Bilona = how the ghee is made.
How to choose
Look for a producer that states the animals are grass-fed and names the milk source and method, with lab-tested purity. The label word alone isn't enough — see best A2 ghee and organic ghee for the full checklist.

Frequently asked questions
What is grass-fed ghee?
Grass-fed ghee is made from the milk of cows or buffaloes raised mainly on grass and natural forage rather than grain-heavy feed. This tends to produce richer milk and ghee that can be higher in fat-soluble vitamins and CLA.
Is grass-fed ghee better?
Grass-fed ghee is often richer and more nutritious because grass-fed milk carries more fat-soluble vitamins and beneficial fatty acids. It is best when combined with A2 milk and the traditional bilona method, and verified for purity.
Is grass-fed the same as A2 or organic?
No. Grass-fed is about the animal's diet, A2 is about the milk protein type, and organic is about farming practices. The best ghee often combines all three, so check each separately.
