A2 Bilona Ghee: Meaning, Benefits, Price & How to Buy Genuine Online

A2 bilona ghee is ghee made from A2 milk (from desi cows or buffalo) using the bilona method: whole milk is set to curd, hand-churned into makhan and slow-cooked. It costs more than regular ghee because it uses roughly 25–30 litres of milk per kilo; genuine A2 bilona ghee typically sells for about ₹2,000–4,500 per litre.

Quick take

  • A2 = the milk (desi cow or buffalo). Bilona = the method (curd → makhan → ghee).
  • Benefits: richer aroma, cultured flavour, traditional nutrition — with honest caveats.
  • Fair price: roughly ₹2,000–4,500/L; far cheaper is a red flag.
  • Buy only with a batch lab report and named milk source.

What does “A2 bilona ghee” mean?

It is two claims in one label:

  • A2 describes the milk: it comes from animals that produce only A2 beta-casein — Indian desi cows such as Gir and Sahiwal, or buffalo (what is A2 ghee).
  • Bilona describes the method: whole milk → curd → hand-churned makhan → slow-cooked ghee (bilona method explained).

A ghee can be A2 without being bilona (made from A2 cream) or bilona without being A2 (made from crossbred-cow curd). The premium product is both.

Benefits of A2 bilona ghee

  • Cultured aroma: fermenting the milk into curd first gives a deeper, slightly tangy flavour (cultured ghee).
  • Gentle on digestion: almost no lactose or casein remains, and ghee provides butyric acid.
  • Traditional nutrition: carries vitamins A, D, E, K; ghee from grass-fed animals tends to have more of them (grass-fed ghee).
  • Honest caveat: ghee has only traces of protein, so the A1/A2 difference matters far less in ghee than in milk (A2 vs A1 ghee). What you are really paying for is source, method and purity.

A2 bilona ghee is ghee made from A2 milk, from desi cows or buffalo, using the traditional bilona method: whole milk is set to curd, hand-churned into makhan and slow-cooked into ghee.

What are the benefits of A2 bilona ghee?

It has a richer cultured aroma, almost no lactose or casein, butyric acid for gut health and fat-soluble vitamins. Its main advantages over regular ghee are the milk source, the traditional method and verified purity.

Why is A2 bilona ghee so expensive?
